Recommended Daily Allowance: Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

What is Vitamin B2?

Also called Riboflavin (from ribitol, a sugar, and flavonoid, a substance from plants having a pigment called flavone), vitamin B2 is a water-soluble nutrient which acts as a coenzyme (a substance that works in combination with other enzymes) in a variety of processes in the body. Many Americans are deficient in Riboflavin.

Functions of Vitamin B2 in Diet

Riboflavin's main function is to metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy. It also has antioxidant properties.

Weight Control Function

Alongside Vitamins B3 and B6, Riboflavin is required for normal thyroid hormone production. Any deficiency in these B Vitamins will affect thyroid function and metabolism, leading to possible overweight and weight control problems.

Vitamin B2: Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)

US RDA: Women: 1.1mg/day Men: 1.3mg/day
EU RDA: 1.6mg

People Who Need More Vitamin B2 in Diet

People with an increased risk of Riboflavin deficiency include: heavy drinkers, pregnant or nursing women and users of the birth-control pill.
