What is Phosphorus?

An important mineral nutrient, phosphorus is present in every cell in the body and is involved in nearly all physiological chemical reactions. It is also widely available in most natural foods. It used to be thought that for best nutritional results, calcium and phosphorus should be balanced in the ratio 2:1. This is no longer the case, except for baby milks.

Functions of Phosphorus in Diet

Combining with oxygen to form phosphates, phosphorus contributes to bone and teeth health, energy production, alkaline levels in the blood and many other chemical processes.

US RDA: Women: 700mg/day Men: 700mg/day
EU RDA: 800mg

Phosphorus Intake

The typical Western diet contains about twice the recommended amount of phosphorus, so deficiency is not usually a problem. However, some experts believe that too much phosphorus may deplete calcium levels, especially after the age of 40.
