Low GI Diet Foods
For optimum health and weight control,
it's not necessary to eat ONLY low GI foods. Just include more of these
foods in your daily diet, or combine one or more low GI food choices with
higher GI foods in the same meal.
Healthy Low GI Food Options
Low GI Beans/Legumes
Black-eyed, butter beans, garbanzo (chickpeas), haricot, kidney, lentils,
lima, mung, navy, pinto, soy, split peas,
Low GI Bread
Buckwheat, fruit loaf, pumpernickel, rye, 50% oatbran. The best breads
are dense, chewy types.
Low GI Cereal for Breakfast
All-Bran (or any high-fiber bran cereal), granola (sugar-free), oatbran,
oatmeal.
Low GI Dairy Foods
All types of milk (inc. chocolate milk, rice milk or soy milk). Fat-free
and sugar-free fruit yogurt. Low-fat, low-sugar frozen yogurt.
Low GI Grains and Rice
Barley, basmati rice, buckwheat, bulgur wheat, long-grain brown rice,
wild rice.
Low GI Fruit
Apples, berries, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, kiwi, lemons, limes, nectarines,
peaches, oranges, pears, plums, rhubarb.
Low GI Juice
Apple, cranberry, carrot, grapefruit, orange, pear, tomato. (All juice
should be unsweetened)
Low GI Pasta/Noodles
Most varieties of pasta and noodles are on the border between medium and
low GI, although whole wheat pasta is best.
Low GI Potatoes
Most types of potato are classified as high-GI. Medium-GI potatoes include
boiled new potatoes and sweet potatoes.
Low GI Sugars and Sweeteners
Aspartame, fructose, Splenda, stevia. Some brands of honey are on the
border between medium and low GI.
Low GI Vegetables
Artichokes, avocado, asparagus, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts,
cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, corn, cucumber, eggplant, green
beans, green peas, leeks, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, olives, peppers,
spinach, squash, tomato, yam, zucchini.
Low GI Condiments
All herbs, chili powder, garlic, hot sauce, lemon juice, lime juice, mayonnaise,
mustard, salsa, soy, teriyaki, vinegar. (All condiments should be unsweetened)
