Introduction
Food intolerance diets are big business. The manufacturers claim that weight gain can be caused by a person's intolerance towards certain foods. By avoiding these foods, weight loss becomes easier.

How it works
Typically, a slimmer pays anything up to $250 and is given a blood test to determine his/her intolerances. Often, the test uncovers a series of such intolerances and the slimmer is then furnished with two separate food-lists - a list of banned foods and a list of permissible foods. The list of banned items frequently contains a wide variety of common foods, including ordinary bread and most dairy products. The manufacturers claim that if the slimmer follows the plan exactly, he/she will lose weight and feel better.

The claim
Medical evidence linking food intolerance to weight gain is scarce. However, there is growing evidence that these 'blood-test' diets are inaccurate as well as a possible health risk due to lack of essential nutrition.

A note about food intolerance testing
The most reliable method of food-intolerance testing is the 'elimination' diet. Doctors advise that this should be carried out under medical supervision.
