Yogurt in Diet Helps Weight LossOverweight dieters might not think of yogurt as a useful food to help them lose weight, but that's exactly what it is, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Tennessee. Results showed that obese adults who consumed three servings of non-fat yogurt per day, as part of a reduced-calorie diet, lost 22 percent more weight than those who simply reduced calories without adding calcium-rich foods like yogurt. Yogurt in Diet Reduces Body FatIn addition to greater weight loss, those dieters who ate the yogurt also recorded a 61 percent greater reduction in total body fat, and an 81 percent greater loss of belly fat than non-yogurt eaters. Since abdominal or stomach fat is an independent health risk factor for illnesses like cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, the health benefits of yogurt might be highly significant. In any event, losing fat rather than muscle is the ideal result of any diet plan. Yogurt Diet StudySubjects included 34 obese but otherwise healthy adults who were divided into two groups. Both groups followed a calorie-controlled diet, but one group had yogurt included as part of their diet plan. They ate three 6-ounce servings of non-fat yogurt per day which contained about 1,100 milligrams of calcium. The control group ate only one serving of dairy food per day which provided about 450 milligrams of calcium. |
Dietary Calcium Good For Weight ReductionThe result of the study confirms the findings of other studies into the effect of dietary calcium on weight loss. Calcium definitely seems to benefit dieters when part of a calorie reduced eating plan - but whether calcium supplements or calcium-rich foods are better, remains unclear. Meantime, if you want to lose weight, start including non-fat yogurt in your weekly shopping! |
