Diet Sodas Don't Help Weight Loss

According to a study conducted by the University of Texas Health Center, using data about weight and soft drink consumption from the 25-year "San Antonio Heart Study", diet beverages like Diet Pepsi don't help weight reduction. Seven years after entering the heart study, participants who drank diet sodas were more likely to have gained weight than those who drank regular soft drinks.

Why Don't Low Calorie Drinks Help?

Researchers don't know why low calorie drinks like Diet Pepsi fail to help weight reduction. Possible causes include: (1) Diet soda drinkers may not feel as satisfied as regular soda drinkers, and may tend to eat more. (2) Diet beverages may lead to greater fatigue and a corresponding reduction in physical activity. (3) Diet drinkers may believe they can eat more if they consume low-calorie soft drinks, and may underestimate the extra food calories they eat.
